When Companies say “Black Lives Matter..”

I appreciate that businesses and municipalities are taking pause to examine practices and imagery right now during this time of civil and social unrest. Juneteenth is being recognized as a paid holiday, policing practices are being re-evaluated, and now Quaker Oats is retiring the Aunt Jemima brand. I hope for continued self scrutiny of slurs, biases and practices, and less lip service. I hope that businesses who benefit tremendously from minority work forces in entry level positions would recognize their short comings in minority promotions to upper level and executive positions and work diligently to fix that gap.

As a culinary instructor, I’ll continue to do my part in equipping minority students with technical and managerial skill sets, and leverage my relationships in the hospitality industry for minority placement and advancement. It is of utmost importance that companies remove the glass ceilings, and appreciate the overall advantage of diversity contributions. #diversity #diversityandinclusion #hospitalityindustry
